ONE NATION BEHIND A CAUSE

How I turned a 22-year-old walkathon into a national movement.

HE CHALLENGE

After 22 years, awareness was no longer the problem.

The NBK Walkathon was already one of Kuwait’s most recognized public events. People knew it. They trusted it. They had seen it year after year.

The challenge was relevance.

How do you make a long-established event feel fresh, meaningful, and important again without losing what made it successful in the first place?

THE INSIGHT

People don’t rally behind activities.

They rally behind causes.

Walking is personal.

Purpose is collective.

The opportunity was to transform participation from an individual action into a shared national contribution.

THE IDEA

Create a goal bigger than the event itself.

Instead of inviting people to attend a walkathon, the campaign invited Kuwait to achieve something together:

A simple national challenge that transformed every step into progress toward a shared objective.

The idea was easy to understand, easy to join, and impossible to achieve alone.

Success required participation at scale.

THE STRATEGY

The campaign shifted the role of the audience.

Participants were no longer attendees.

They became contributors.

Every family.

Every student.

Every group of friends.

Every individual.

Each step moved the country closer to a collective achievement.

The strategy transformed walking from exercise into participation and transformed participation into belonging.

THE EXECUTION

The campaign was built around a single measurable target that connected every touchpoint.

Communications, activations, event experiences, and public engagement efforts all reinforced the same message:

Every step counts.

The simplicity of the idea allowed people to instantly understand their role while creating a sense of momentum that grew as more people joined the movement.

The number itself became a rallying point.

A visible reminder that individual actions become powerful when multiplied across a nation.

THE OUTCOME

The campaign revitalized one of Kuwait’s longest-running public initiatives and attracted more than 9,000 participants.

More importantly, it transformed a familiar annual event into a collective national mission.

The work also earned Best of Category for Integrated Campaign, recognizing its effectiveness across multiple touchpoints and audiences.

LOOKING BACK

The strongest ideas don’t ask people to attend.

They ask people to belong.

#100MillionSteps succeeded because it gave people something larger than a walkathon.

It gave them a shared purpose.

One person walking is exercise.

Thousands of people walking toward the same goal is a movement.

And that’s how a 22-year-old event found a new reason to move forward.

You’ve got taste. I’ll give you that.
